Mapcom runs for VCU Massey Cancer Center in Ukrop's 10k

Employees place from 17th to 28,817th in a field of 35,000.

March 30, 2010 – RICHMOND, VA Mapcom Systems employees and family members gathered together early Saturday morning to raise funds for Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) Massey Cancer Center by running in the 11th Annual Ukrop's Monument Avenue 10k. Mapcom's own Richard Saunders III turned in a phenomenal 33:10 time to claim 17th place in a field of over 35,000 participants.

"This is our second year participating in the Ukrop's 10k. It offers us the opportunity to raise funds for the Massey Cancer Center and to foster stronger ties with each other," said Sydney Cortez, Project Manager and Mapcom's 10k organizer. "There is a sense of pride and accomplishment that comes with finishing a race. We are already looking forward to the fall when Mapcom employees will participate in the Richmond 8k or half-marathon," continued Cortez.

All 31 Mapcom participants wore custom-designed shirts to highlight the team in the race during the event. The cool weather helped the runners turn in good race times and the walkers finished in good spirits. Following the race, the Mapcom team gathered at a local restaurant to celebrate.

The Ukrop's Monument Avenue 10k is an entertaining community event that includes bands playing all along the tree-lined route down Richmond's famous Monument Avenue. Elite runners lead a crowd of costumed runners and wlakers, while spitit teams cheer on all participants all along the route.
